What happened is a travesty. Someone should have looked at the bigger picture and seen that these boys were happy, healthy, and thriving; but they didn't. Legally, the boys cannot be placed back in their home.
It would seem the bureaucratic red tape is strong enough to bind reason, logic, and sensibility.
The question that remains is exactly what IS happening as a result of all this.
With our case:
We know nothing about the boys and where they are except that they are together and not in this city. Basically, as a result of policy, they were uprooted again, but this time, in addition to changing schools and homes, they changed cities.
They once had our last name. They now have their birth name.
They were enrolled in baseball. They are no longer part of their team.
They had a family. They are now in foster care...again.
We are scheduled to say goodbye to them tomorrow.
The Office of the Child Advocate (OCA), which exists to make sure that the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS)*** really does serve the best interest of families, has called to let us know they are investigating.
The head of DFCS for the state called this week to say that her attempts to contact our county office have yielded nothing. It was a “courteous call” to let us know she hadn't forgotten about our case, but she has not been able to actually talk with anyone at the county office (Had I not been so emotionally spent at the time, I would have said something snarky like, “Welcome to the club”).
With us:
Emotionally, every day gets “easier.” The only thing keeping us sane is the strength we are given by the prayers of everyone who has rallied behind us and the truth that God knows, understands, defends, loves, holds, and controls everything.
I have begun the process for medical clearance with the military. Basically, that means I have filled out a ton of paperwork and had doctors and dentists fill out a ton of paperwork, and am waiting to appear before a panel of a doctor, a mental health professional, and some other person to discuss said paperwork and prove that I am medically capable of accompanying my husband on an overseas assignment.
We are trying to sell a house in a dying market. UGH!
We are trying to remember what it is like to be a family of two.
“I was made for this.”
That's what I told my therapist about one month after our boys came home. Now, in the aftermath of the disrupted placement, I'm remembering that meeting, and trying to figure out what happened. And I'm still trying to figure out how to live when the world just doesn't seem to be spinning correctly.
***Most states just call it the Department of Family Services. In light of our current reality, I find it interesting that Georgia distinguishes between family and children, as though they were two separate issues. Speaks volumes, people.

As I read this I am reminded once again of how inhospitable the world is. It isn't fair and it really doesn't care about anyone or anything but itself. The world just wants to cover it's own butt regardless of who it hurts. I find it hard to believe that God "so loved the world" that He was willing to die for it. I get angry at it and frustrated to the point I want to lash out, but God loves it!How? Why? I don't know the answer I just know that He holds everything in His hands and He really does work all things together for our good. Sometimes the way He works makes me just a little mad at Him, sometimes a lot mad at Him. I don't believe this ole world will ever spin correctly, but I do believe there will be a day that God will take the spin out of everything and there will be peace, and truth and justice will reign forever. That's our hope and what I cling to to get me through each day.
ReplyDeleteI've been following and praying for you since Kelley told me about what was going on and again, my words of sorrow for your heartache ring shallow, I know.
ReplyDeleteI also do not understand the workings behind God stepping in and not stepping in...and will never, I fear. I personally do not believe He is puppeting every step taken because that would mean that He was PURPOSELY guiding people to make really horrible and tragic decisions for your boys and for you, and I just don't think that's what is happening. I think we are in a fallen world, with an enemy who prowls, and while I completely agree that God takes ALL situations and works them for our good...I don't know that our good is necessarily realized on this earth.
That's me. And Lord knows I am no theologian. But I believe God loves you and those boys and is hurting and angry at the choices His people make.
I'm praying for you and I'm praying so specifically for the boys.
Tina, I haven't commented much lately, but mostly because the words aren't right for the situation, no matter what would be said. I do want you to know that I am thinking of you and Tim and both of your families. I have been praying for you and my bible study group of girls have also been praying. Just keep putting on foot in front of the other. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I am praying for the boys as well. There are other things I want to say about how terrible this siutation is, some platitude to try to make you feel better, and what I see at the end of these situations by teaching high school special ed, but none of it will help. The best I can do is say the whole thing sucks, because it does. I do believe in prayer and the power of it, so the best I can do is tell you I am praying- and that I really am, not just saying it. Hang in there, my friend.

Oh Tina,
ReplyDeleteMy heart keeps breaking over this. Over our broken world.
Praying for you all,
Julie
